What changed in Etsy titles in 2026
Etsy's search now looks at the whole listing: title, tags, attributes, description, first photo and reviews. So the title no longer has to carry every keyword. Etsy's own guidance (Seller Handbook, "New Guidance for Listing Titles", 27 April 2026):
| Keep in the title | Move out of the title |
|---|---|
| What the item is, said once ("mug", "sticker") | Gift phrases like "gift for him", unless the item is a gift by nature: put them in tags |
| The top traits: color, material, size, style | Subjective words like "perfect", "beautiful", "cute": put them in the description |
| Under about 15 words, easy to scan | "On sale", "free shipping", prices: remove them, Etsy shows badges |
| Each word once | Repeated phrases ("cat shirt, funny cat shirt, cat lover shirt") |
Example from Etsy: "Dad T-Shirt | Father Shirt | Personalized Father's Day Gift | Personalized Dad T-Shirt..." becomes "Personalized 100% Cotton Dad T-Shirt: Custom Kids' Names S-XL".
How to use your 13 tags now
- Use all 13. An empty slot is a search you cannot appear in.
- Up to 20 characters each, and phrases of 2-3 words rather than single words.
- Tags are now where the words you removed from the title go: synonyms, styles, occasions, who it is for, gift phrases.
- Do not spend slots on tags that only repeat your title word for word.
Should you rewrite every title?
No. Etsy says old-style titles are not penalised. Leave listings that already sell alone, rewrite the ones with few views, a few at a time, and compare views a few weeks later.
